A woman is in a critical condition after being stabbed in the neck in what police believe was “an unprovoked attack” in Birmingham city centre.
West Midlands police were called to reports of a stabbing at Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9pm on Friday.
The woman in her 30s sustained a “serious neck injury” and remains in hospital. Police arrested a man in his 20s near the scene and he is in custody.
DI James Nix said: “We believe this was an unprovoked attack and are working to understand why it happened. We will have officers in the area today to continue our investigation and provide reassurance.
“We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”
Witnesses or anyone with information have been asked to contact West Midlands police by calling 101 and quoting log 5503 of 7 November.
Investigating officers have opened a major incident public portal (MIPP) where people can submit photos or video relevant to the investigation.
The force said it was particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the city centre before the incident or who might have seen someone acting suspiciously.
