Flight delays usually trigger a familiar scene at airports: impatient passengers venting and pacing around the terminal or scrolling through their phones. But at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal offered a strikingly different picture.

En route to Auckland, New Zealand, Goyal converted the unexpected downtime into an impromptu workspace. Sitting at the airport with official documents spread out next to him, the minister sifted through files and signed papers, making the delay look like part of his schedule rather than an interruption. Instead of waiting out the clock, he appeared absorbed in clearing pending tasks.

A journalist present at the airport asked him about working amid a delayed schedule. Goyal responded candidly: “Why waste the extra time we have? Since the flight is delayed, we can use this time to send out more instructions so the work continues here.”

While most travellers resort to scrolling through their phones, Goyal showed how delays can be turned into opportunities. Whether it is replying to emails, planning the day ahead or organising tasks, his example serves as a reminder that time need not be wasted.

Goyal On The Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

Goyal is travelling to New Zealand on an official visit as part of ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries. The agreement, if finalised, is expected to improve trade cooperation, market access and economic partnership between India and New Zealand.

He said that conversations around an FTA have been happening “for about 20 years,” but they were repeatedly pushed aside due to various reasons.

According to him, the push for renewed engagement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047,’ which, Goyal said, requires expanding relations with developed nations and increasing trade and investment.

Goyal highlighted that an FTA would help India’s growth story by opening markets and creating employment opportunities back home. Discussions, he said, have been ongoing “for the past 6 months”, and now there are “possibilities of an FTA really fast.”
