The grandfather of a four-year-old girl has been identified as the prime accused in the rape of the minor in West Bengal’s Hooghly district. According to News18 sources, the man has been arrested on Sunday.

The shocking incident occurred on Friday near Tarakeswar railway station, where the child’s family had been taking shelter. Officials said the girl was resting beside her parents when she was allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted.

According to sources, the victim’s family belongs to a nomadic Banjara community and reportedly lacks official identification documents, which initially made the investigation more challenging for authorities. The family, who had been taking shelter near Tarakeswar railway station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, approached the local police station after discovering a cut on the four-year-old girl’s throat. She was immediately taken to a hospital for medical examination. The victim’s family reportedly went to hospital themselves, police did not take them.

During the medical check-up, doctors found that the child was bleeding, suggesting that she had been sexually assaulted. This prompted the police to initiate an inquiry into the incident. However, sources said that soon after the discovery, the family fled the hospital in panic, only to return later. Once they returned, police officers formally registered a case and began a detailed investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the local police of negligence in handling the case, alleging that officials refused to register the case.

Party workers staged a protest late on Friday night, demanding immediate justice for the victim and accountability for the lapses in the police response. The investigation into the incident continues under tight security.
