Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has given the green light to the first phase alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project, the government announced on Friday.
A statement from the CM’s office stated that phase-I of the alignment will link the three phases of the Technopark, the airport, Thampanoor bus stand and railway station, the secretariat, and the government medical college hospital.
The project, managed by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), will feature 27 stations along the 31-kilometer route of phase-I.

The metro rail will start from Pappanamcode, passing through Killipalam, Palayam, Sreekaryam, Kazhakoottam, Technopark, Kochuveli, the airport, and concluding at Enchakkal.
Interchange stations will be situated at Kazhakootam, Technopark, and Karyavattom, according to the statement from the CMO.
As part of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro project, KMRL has been tasked with constructing the Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom flyovers, with the Sreekaryam flyover already progressing rapidly.
The metro rail project is expected to significantly boost Thiruvananthapuram’s development, the statement added.
A Transport Department order has instructed KMRL to prepare and submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail based on the approved alignment and in line with the Metro Rail Policy 2017 and central government guidelines.
Administrative approval for the implementation of the light metro rail system in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode districts by the Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd was granted in September 2015.
In September 2022, the entire project was assigned to KMRL, which was then tasked with preparing the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), Alternative Analysis Report (AAR), and a revised DPR following the Metro Rail Policy 2017 and central government guidelines.
After conducting a comprehensive mobility study, KMRL concluded that a Mono Rail or Light Metro system would not suffice for the ever-growing city of Thiruvananthapuram and recommended a conventional metro, akin to other cities, as the most suitable option.
