A major water tank collapse in the Thammanam area of Kochi, Kerala, in the early hours of Monday (November 10, 2025) led to water gushing into the nearby houses, damaging vehicles and property.

The incident occurred after the wall of a chamber of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) drinking water storage tank ruptured. The ground-level reservoir, with a capacity of 1.35 crore litres, is reportedly about 50 years old and has two chambers. The wall of one of these chambers, a 68 lakh-litre capacity tank, ruptured.

Officials suspect that the age of the structure could have been the cause for the accident.

Water supply to be hit

Drinking water supply will be disrupted in several parts of the Kochi Corporation following the incident.

According to KWA, water supply will be disrupted in regions from Vyttila to Petta and Thammanam to Cherannallur. The pumping to the former regions was slated to occur on Tuesday, which will be affected following the incident.

KWA is considering carrying out repair works as the other chamber of the tank remains undamaged.

Water supply in the Vennala region will not be affected as the pumping there is being carried out by an 85 lakh-litre ground-level reservoir at Thammanam.
