Madhya Pradesh minister and BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday stirred controversy with his remarks on the molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore, saying that the players should “learn from the incident”.

Speaking to reporters, Vijayvargiya said that players should be more cautious while travelling and inform local authorities or security personnel beforehand.

“Any player goes anywhere, like us, when we go out, we tell at least one local person. I am concerned about this to the players that it will be noticed that in the future, if we ever leave our place, we should talk to the local administration or the security in-charge,” he said.

The senior BJP leader further stated that players often attract large crowds due to their popularity and cited examples of overenthusiastic fans from other countries.

“Cricket players have a big craze. I have seen English football player’s clothes bursting and a girl even kissed him. The players should not realize their popularity. The players are very popular. This is a lesson for all of us, and also for them,” he added.

Vijayvargiya’s remarks came after two Australian cricketers were allegedly harassed by a man on a motorcycle while walking to a café in Indore on Thursday morning.

Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the case. Cricket Australia confirmed that the players were “approached and touched inappropriately” and that a complaint had been lodged through the team’s security officer.

The incident has also turned political, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) attacking the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, calling the episode “a shameful blot” that has “lowered India’s image before the world”.
