Union Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, has reacted strongly to the FIR registered against him over his alleged remarks during an election rally.

Addressing the controversy in Patna, Singh said, “That is only one chunk of the video; it is not the complete video. People should watch the full recording. If an FIR has been registered, the entire video will be investigated. I will be questioned, and I will answer. Everything is recorded.”

He accused the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of twisting his words for political gain, saying, “RJD’s people are habitual of pulling up one chunk, making it viral, tweeting and misleading.” Singh maintained that the clip circulating online had been edited to malign his image and that the truth would emerge once the full video was examined.

The controversy erupted as Bihar heads for polls in the first phase of the assembly elections on Thursday. The FIR was registered on the Election Commission’s instructions after a video surfaced showing Singh allegedly instructing his supporters to ensure that “some opposition leaders are not allowed to leave their homes on voting day.”

The FIR, filed under sections of the Representation of the People Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, accuses Singh of making remarks that could incite voter intimidation and disrupt the electoral process.

Opposition slams JDU over remarks

The RJD and other opposition parties have demanded strict action, calling the remarks an example of the ruling alliance’s “fear of losing ground.” The RJD said the statement reflected the government’s disregard for democratic principles, adding, “When ministers themselves talk of confining opposition leaders, how can voters feel safe?”

Lalan Singh, who represents Munger in the Lok Sabha, is a key figure in the Nitish Kumar-led JDU and serves as the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj. The timing of the FIR, coming just before voting begins, has added to the charged political atmosphere in Bihar, where allegations of voter manipulation and criminal influence continue to dominate the campaign narrative.

The case has now become a flashpoint between the ruling JDU-BJP alliance and the RJD-led opposition, setting the stage for an even more contentious election battle.
