After remaining suspended for four months, the iconic toy train service between Neral and Matheran hill station in Maharashtra resumed operations from Thursday.

Train services on the 21-km Neral–Matheran route, known for its scenic ghat section, were halted in early June as a safety measure during the heavy rains. However, the Aman Lodge–Dasturi Point shuttle service near the hill station continued throughout the season.

Nestled in the Western Ghats, Matheran—one of India’s smallest hill stations—receives intense monsoon rainfall each year. The region often faces landslides, track damage, and embankment washouts, prompting authorities to suspend operations for several months to ensure passenger safety.

In a post on X on Wednesday, the CR wrote, “Neral–Matheran Train Services Are Back! We are pleased to announce the resumption of Neral–Matheran train services from 06.11.2025.

Passengers are invited to enjoy the scenic and historic journey through misty hills and lush green valleys. Plan your visit and experience the natural beauty of Matheran and Neral!”

The Central Railway had announced in a release on Tuesday that services would resume from today, with four daily trains—two from Neral and two from Matheran. The first train from Neral was scheduled to depart at 8.50 am, followed by another at 10.25 am, reaching Matheran at 11.30 am and 1.05 pm, respectively. From Matheran, the return trains will leave at 2.45 pm and 4pm.

Each service will comprise six coaches, including three second-class and two luggage-cum-second-class vans. The first train of the day features a Vistadome coach, while the second includes a first-class coach, the CR had said in a press release.

In addition, shuttle services between Aman Lodge and Matheran will run six times on weekdays and eight times on weekends, the CR added.

Aman Lodge station, located near Dasturi Point, serves as a key transit spot since motor vehicles are banned beyond this point, making the shuttle a convenient option for tourists and residents alike.

The Neral–Matheran Light Railway, a heritage mountain line, first began operations in 1907, completing 118 years of service this year.
