Not just the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train, the Narendra Modi Government also has a plan for 240-km long bullet train network between Amritsar and Jammu. This will be a big gift for Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) after the Vande Bharat services that started recently for the Kashmir Valley.
The National High-Speed Rail Authority has invited bids for a ‘Final survey for alignment and aerial survey’ for the proposed Amritsar-Jammu High speed rail corridor (HSR). CNN-NEWS18 has a copy of the document. Both Amritsar and Jammu are key commercial centres in Punjab and J&K respectively.
“With an objective to meet growing passenger demand and optimise high speed rail connectivity between major cities/commercial and economic activity centres, an HSR corridor is being studied between Amritsar-Jammu covering desired obligatory points and major public hubs among other considerations. For this purpose, NHSRCL is undertaking preparation of Detailed Project Report of these corridors,” the document says.
The present study for the Amritsar-Jammu corridor is a preliminary route development and final location survey. A final location survey with Aerial LiDAR technology will be deployed to prepare the final alignment design.
In July this year, the government had told Parliament that it had plans expand the HSR network in India beyond MAHSR (Mumbai-Ahmedabad) corridor to meet the growing passenger demand between major cities of commercial, economic and tourist importance.

“HSR projects are highly capital intensive and any decision for taking up new project is based on many factors such as technical feasibility, financial & economic viability, traffic demand and availability of funds & financing options etc. Commercial operation of MAHSR Project involves an affordable fare-structure for the services taking in to account the socio-economic conditions of the clientele for optimum patronage of the HSR sectors,” the government had told Parliament.
The bullet train could run in Gujarat by 2028 between Sabarmati and Vapi and then in the full 508-km section from Ahmedabad to Mumbai by 2030, the government has said.
The under-construction corridor would be passing through Mumbai-Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Thane, Virar, and Boisar in Maharashtra and Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati in Gujarat — a total of around 508 km.
