'Our time in the sun': Textile major Welspun Living's growth unfazed by US tariffs

Textile manufacturer Welspun Living and its growth is not hurt by US tariffs despite challenges and continues to partner with top US retailers, CEO Dipali Goenka said on Thursday, November 6.

“We have our time in the sun now; US tariffs will not hurt company’s growth,” Goenka said at the 12th SBI Banking and Economics Conclave 2025 in Mumbai.

India has been paying a hefty 50% tariff on its exports to the US since August 27, partly as a punishment upon PM Modi’s government for purchasing Russian oil. Textiles and apparel, one of India’s biggest export categories, along with gems and jewellery are among the few industries that have been facing the heat of the steep duties.

However, Goenka said that tariff-related difficulties does little to challenge India’s status as the largest exporter of cotton textiles to the US.

“India is the largest exporter of cotton textiles to the US and that cannot be taken away. Nobody can replace serviceablity; if we put customers first, India can win,” she told the audience. “We are in strategic partnership with all top US retailers and they believe in us.”

Welspun India’s latest Q2 earnings report shows tariffs have not dimmed the company’s growth so far. Its net profit and revenue were up 53.2% and 32.5% respectively for the quarter ended September 30, from the same period a year ago.

For now, the company is keeping the engines running in their factories.

“These are challenging times with the global turmoil. We make a million units of towels a day; most important thing is to let our factories go on,” Goenka said.
