Von der Leyen, Metsola to meet Monday for crunch budget talks

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Monday in a bid to avert a looming parliament rebellion over the Commission’s proposed seven-year EU budget, an EU official confirmed on Thursday.

The Commission’s €865 billion plan to merge farm and regional subsidies into national programmes negotiated with Brussels has drawn fierce opposition from regions, farmers and MEPs.

Following a high-stakes meeting ahead of Parliament’s 12 November deadline to demand budget revisions, EU Budget Commissioner Piotr Serafin said the executive was considering “legal changes” and that von der Leyen would invite Metsola and the rotating Council presidency to a formal meeting.

An EU official told Euractiv the meeting will take place on Monday, though it remains unclear who will represent the Council.

Thomas Møller-Nielsen contributed reporting.
