The value of agricultural production in the EU fell by 0.9% in 2024

Brussels – The value of agricultural production in the European Union (EU) was 531.9 billion euros at basic prices in 2024, representing a decrease of 0.9% compared to 2023, according to the community statistics office, Eurostat, which reported this on Friday.
The statistics office noted that 2024 was the second consecutive year with a “slight decline” in the indicator.
“This variation in nominal value reflected the balance between a slight increase in production volume (1% more) and a decrease in the nominal price of agricultural products and services (1.8% less),” Eurostat pointed out in a statement.
The member states with the highest value of agricultural production last year were France (88.3 billion euros), Germany (75.5 billion), Italy (70.2 billion), and Spain (68.7 billion).
Following them were the Netherlands (41.3 billion euros), Poland (39.5 billion), and Romania (20.2 billion).
Eurostat indicated that three-quarters (75.9%) of the estimated value of agricultural production in the European Union took place in those seven countries.
It added that in fifteen member states, the value of agricultural production was higher in 2024 than in 2023. The main percentage increases occurred in Ireland (8.9% more), Croatia (8.8%), and Sweden (5%), while the most significant decreases were detected in France (9% less), Romania (8.5%), and Bulgaria (8%).
Half of the value of agricultural production of the Twenty-Seven (50.3%) last year corresponded to crops (267.7 billion euros) and just over two-fifths (41.1%) to animals and animal products (218.8 billion). The rest was generated through agricultural services and secondary activities.
The costs of agricultural inputs in the EU not related to investment (intermediate consumption) were 3.7% lower in 2024 than in 2023, amounting to 303.3 billion euros.
The variations in the value of agricultural production and intermediate consumption in 2024 resulted in a 3.1% increase in the gross value added generated by agriculture, reaching 228.6 billion euros. (November 7, 2025)
