Ljubljana – Slovenia welcomed the package of enlargement reports presented by the European Commission, believing that enlargement will further strengthen the EU. The Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MZEZ) emphasized that the EU’s enlargement to the Western Balkans and the East is a geostrategic necessity, and joined the Commission’s recommendations for candidate countries.
“The current geopolitical circumstances and numerous open conflicts in our immediate neighborhood and the world dictate the acceleration of integration processes, which will bring more stability, security, and prosperity,” emphasized MZEZ, where they expressed Slovenia’s commitment to further support for candidate and potential candidate countries for membership.
According to the presented reports, Montenegro is currently the best positioned among the Western Balkan countries on the path to the EU, aiming to conclude accession negotiations by the end of next year, and Albania, which aims to do so by the end of 2027. Meanwhile, by the end of this year, Ukraine and Moldova will be ready to start negotiations on all chapters of the negotiation framework.
Regarding Serbia, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos assessed that the adoption of reforms in this country has significantly slowed down due to mass protests following the deadly collapse of a canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad. (November 4)
