BRUSSELS – European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, welcomed the adoption of the Law on the Unified Voter Register in the Serbian Assembly and stated that it is “an important step” and that Brussels “looks forward to the implementation of the law in practice.” “For Serbia to progress towards the EU, it needs a framework that ensures free and fair elections and enjoys the trust of citizens,” Kos stated on the X network.
Members of the Serbian Assembly earlier today adopted amendments to the Law on the Unified Voter Register, which provides for the establishment of a commission tasked with the authority to revise the Unified Voter Register. The amendments to the law are the result of parliamentary dialogue aimed at improving electoral conditions, which began in April 2024 based on reports from the OSCE and ODIHR observation missions regarding the elections in Serbia. According to the explanation of the amendments to this law, the dialogue was conducted in accordance with the first priority recommendation of ODIHR from the Final Report on the extraordinary parliamentary elections held on December 17, 2023.
