Gurugram police urge bars to stop drunk patrons from driving, citing more accidents and reckless driving by Thar and Bullet owners.

In a major step aimed at curbing drink-driving incidents, the Gurugram police have directed bars and restaurants to ensure their intoxicated patrons do not drive away — putting business owners on the hook if customers are caught behind the wheel after drinking.

The order invokes Section 168 of the BNSS and instructs establishments to deploy staff who monitor customers’ consumption, intervene when necessary, and arrange for cabs or alternate drivers. Officials said notices have already been issued across the city.

Haryana police chief O.P. Singh and Gurugram Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora made a pointed remark about owners of high-performance vehicles, saying that those driving models like the Mahindra Thar and Royal Enfield Bullet are frequently involved in reckless driving. Singh said:

“The Thar is not a car, it’s a statement … people who drive Thars perform stunts on the roads.”

The move comes amid a worrying rise in road accidents in the city — the police noted there were 810 incidents with 333 fatalities in the first nine months of the year.
