Belém, Brazil (dpa) – The EU wants to redouble its commitment to climate protection, further accelerate implementation, close the remaining gaps, intensify partnerships and ensure real progress, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday (November 6) at the start of a climate conference in Brazil.

She was addressing dozens of heads of state and government in Belém, Brazil, where the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) opens next week. The EU would do its part to help make the climate conference a success, von der Leyen asserted.

Von der Leyen initially left open how exactly the EU intends to strengthen its commitment.

The EU Commission has just suffered a setback in terms of climate protection. The EU member states agreed to reduce emissions by 90 percent by 2040 – but with significantly more flexibility and fallback options than proposed by the Commission. (November 7)
