Gonzato: The vetting is the backbone of the justice reform in Albania, to be closed when the constitutional mandate ends

The processes of transitional re-evaluation of judges and prosecutors in Albania within the framework of the Justice Reform is nearing its end, with less than eight months remaining until its completion in June 2026.

The European Union Ambassador, Silvio Gonzato, during his visit to the Special Appeals Court (KPA), where he also met with the chairman Sokol Çomo, emphasized the importance of finalizing all vetting activities before June 2026, when the constitutional mandate ends.

Through a statement on social media, the office of the European Union delegation in Tirana emphasized that “vetting remains the backbone of the justice reform and its completion is a fundamental step in the process of Albania’s EU membership.”

The EU delegation office also underscored that it firmly supports the vetting process and the International Monitoring Operation (ONM).

“The recent unjustified attacks and disinformation against the ONM and its international observers are unacceptable and aim to undermine trust in the justice system and the justice reform,” the EU emphasized.

Vetting has been the main pillar of the justice reform in Albania. While the re-evaluation process at the first level in the Independent Qualification Commission has been completed, the process is expected to conclude in June 2026 also at the Special Appeals Court.

According to authorities, an important aspect of this process is the fact that the constitutional institutions responsible for the Vetting process, KLGJ, KLP, and ILD, will continue consistently with the same standards that the Vetting process has had to keep the justice system clean.

Vetting and the Justice Reform are assessed in international reports as a key factor in advancing Albania’s European agenda, while the results of the Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) receive special recognition.

Albania has opened five out of six negotiation chapters with the aim of opening the last chapter within the year and closing them by 2027. (November 7)
