Brussels – The European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) has supported the European Citizens’ Initiative My Voice, My Choice for safe and accessible abortion for all women in the EU. In the resolution proposal, it called on the European Commission to establish a voluntary mechanism to assist member states in ensuring safe abortion.
The rapporteur of the European Parliament from the liberals, Abir Al-Sahlani, who prepared the resolution proposal, described the vote as a great victory for all who stood behind the My Voice, My Choice movement, coordinated by the Slovenian NGO Institute 8th of March.
“It proves that our union can stand for both women’s freedom of choice and respect for national legislation. This initiative shows what is possible when citizens and institutions join forces in the pursuit of equality and democracy,” said the MEP from Sweden.
At the Institute 8th of March, they marked the confirmation of the resolution proposal as the first victory. According to the initiative’s coordinator and director of the institute, Nika Kovač, it has once again shown that fundamental reproductive rights are a topic that unites people.
They added that they are already preparing for the vote on the resolution proposal at the plenary session of the European Parliament, which is expected to take place at the end of the month in Strasbourg.
The European Commission accepted the My Voice, My Choice initiative, which has been signed by more than 1.1 million EU citizens, for consideration on September 1 of this year. It now has until the beginning of March 2026 to respond to it. (November 5)
