Outside a polling station in a building in Arlington, Virginia, a staunchly Democratic city just across the Potomac River from Washington DC, Andrew Wallace, a 72-year-old retired interior designer, had just voted for Abigail Spanberger for governor as a rebuke to Donald Trump.
Wallace says the “cruelty” of the administration has been most disturbing over the past ten months, including “things like bombing boats . . . operating outside the law, pushing the boundaries at every place, not to mention disrespect for anybody who doesn’t totally agree with them”.
Ilona Lantos, a 70-year-old retired employee in the technology sector, said she had backed Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate for governor, and approved of Trump’s second presidency so far.
“I really value national security,” she said. “I like the foreign policies, he’s re-establishing the United States’ position, how it’s viewed, and all the peace that he brought.”
