A video from Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district has surfaced online, showing a 14-year-old boy being tied upside down to a tree and brutally beaten by a group of youths on suspicion of mobile theft.
The visuals have triggered outrage and prompted a police inquiry, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
In the viral clip, several men are seen questioning and assaulting the minor as he hangs upside down from a tree. The child’s cries for help go unheard as onlookers record the scene.
According to local police, the boy is a minor who had previously faced allegations of petty theft in the area.
“Even if such accusations exist, no one has the right to take the law into their own hands. Those responsible for this barbaric act will face strict action,” said the station house officer (SHO).
An investigation has been initiated, and legal proceedings are in progress, officials added.
The incident has once again raised concerns over mob justice and the increasing tendency of people to act as vigilantes rather than rely on legal processes.
In a separate case from the same district, a woman was accused of practising witchcraft and was publicly humiliated by villagers.
The assault, which occurred on October 19 in the Paniyara Police Station area, came to light after a video of the attack went viral last week.
According to police, the woman was performing religious rituals with two tantriks when a mob accused her of black magic, dragged her through the streets, and beat her.
The footage shows her attempting to cover herself with a bedsheet as she is paraded around the village.
Following the incident, the woman reportedly attempted self-harm but was rescued by family members. She has since left the village.
Superintendent of Police Somendra Meena said efforts are underway to identify the attackers. “Such acts of mob brutality will not be tolerated. All those involved will face strict legal consequences,” he stated.
Paniyara Police Station in-charge Ashish Kumar Singh confirmed that an investigation team has been deployed and assured that severe action will be taken against those responsible.
