According to IMD, Cyclone Montha has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal.

The landfall process of Cyclone Montha has begun along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The process is expected to continue for three to four hours, accompanied by heavy rainfall, powerful winds and rough sea conditions.
According to the IMD’s latest update, the cyclone will continue to move north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, around Kakinada, as a severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h.

As the storm makes landfall, strong gales and heavy rains are battering coastal districts such as East Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinada, leading to widespread power outages, fallen trees and disrupted transport. Sea conditions remain extremely rough, with fishermen advised to stay ashore. Port operations at Kakinada and Krishnapatnam have been suspended until further notice.
Andhra Pradesh On High Alert
In anticipation of heavy rainfall and potential flooding, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed ministers, MPs and MLAs to provide immediate assistance to people in the affected regions. The state government activated disaster-response protocols in 39 constituencies likely to experience intense rainfall, ensuring coordination between local authorities, police and relief agencies.

The IMD has issued red alerts for several coastal districts, warning of high waves and possible storm surges in low-lying areas. Evacuation efforts are underway, with tens of thousands of residents moved to safer locations.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response teams are deployed across the coastal belt. Temporary shelters, food supplies and medical assistance have been arranged for evacuees. Schools, colleges and offices in vulnerable areas remain closed.

After completing landfall, Cyclone Montha is expected to weaken gradually while moving inland, bringing heavy rain to parts of Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors, follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel as the storm continues its passage over Andhra Pradesh.
