A 19-year-old college student from Baselwa Colony in Old Faridabad died by suicide after being blackmailed with AI-generated deepfake images and videos of him and his sisters, police said on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, when two unidentified suspects allegedly demanded ₹20,000 from the student in exchange for not circulating the fabricated content online.
According to officials, the deceased, a B.Com student at a local college, had been under severe distress for the past ten days due to the constant harassment.
A senior officer from the NIT police station said the victim’s phone had been hacked, and the accused began threatening him via a messaging app.
“They had created morphed pictures and videos of the victim along with his sisters,” the official said, adding that a case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the culprits behind the crime.
Initial investigation indicated that the accused had issued repeated threats to the 19-year-old student, which allegedly drove him to consume poison inside his room around 7 pm on Saturday.
“His family members immediately took him to a local hospital,” said Yashpal Yadav, public relations officer of the Faridabad Police, adding that the student succumbed during treatment.
An FIR has been registered against two unidentified suspects under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “We are trying to ascertain their identities, and they will soon be apprehended,” Yadav said. Police are examining the victim’s phone records, chat history, and social media accounts to trace how the AI-generated content was created and shared.
Family members told police that the victim, Rahul Bharti, had withdrawn from social interactions and appeared visibly distressed for several days before his death. His father, Manoj Bharti, said Rahul’s behaviour had changed drastically over the last two weeks. According to him, he ate little, spoke rarely, and spent long hours alone in his room. The family had no idea he was under such severe psychological pressure.Â
On Saturday evening, Rahul reportedly ingested salphaz tablets in his room. As his condition worsened, his family rushed him to the hospital, but he could not be saved. Upon checking Rahul’s phone, his father discovered extensive chat exchanges with a man named “Sahil”, who had allegedly created and sent morphed nude images and videos of Rahul and demanded ₹20,000 to stop their circulation.
In the last messages, Sahil allegedly threatened to post the material online if the demand was not met and even incited Rahul to take his own life, suggesting the substance he could use.
The family also suspects that another acquaintance, “Neeraj Bharti,” may have been involved. Rahul’s last phone conversation on the day of the incident was reportedly with him. A complaint has been filed against both suspects.
